July 2012 Athlete of the Month
35-year-old Trent Simmons fell in love with Ultimate Frisbee while attending DU in 1995, and he has been playing ever since. He became captain of his college team after just two tournaments, and was captaining a Club Team by the time he was 21. He began organizing tournaments, and played in 38 different states on every field surface imaginable. Trent plays Ultimate 150-200 days a year, including 25 weekend tournaments a year for the last 16 years. 3 years ago he started Southwest Ultimate so he could organize Ultimate tournaments full time, and since then has run approximately 50 tournaments in a dozen states across the country. This year he’s going International with current projects in Israel, Costa Rica, Brazil and Uraguay to name a few. Trent points out that the most important aspect of Ultimate is the Spirit of the Game; which is the concept that respect for your opponent and for the integrity of the game, itself, is more important than anything (even winning or losing!). Because of this “Spirit”, Ultimate is one of the few sports which is self-refereed, even at the World Championship level. The game of Ultimate Frisbee is not just a game or a sport to these players… it’s a lifestyle!
