January 2012 Athlete of the Month
Vince Sanchez is a 14-year-old athletic inspiration! He was born with a very rare metabolic disorder and was not expected to live past the age of 5. He became very sick and near death a little before his 9th birthday, when he received an experimental transplant of the liver and kidneys which saved his life. At the time he was only the third person in the U.S. to receive this procedure and believed to be the youngest in the world. The transplant transformed his life entirely, although he still suffers from the side effects of his illness, including some cognitive issues. He is now a happy 8th grader who attends school daily, and plays sports for the Special Olympics. His favorite sport is baseball which he has played for 3 years now. Basketball is also one of his favorites. He was named “Mr. Defense” by his coaches because of his ability to steal the basketball. Vince is an amazing boy whose shining strength has led him through much of his young life; as he clearly believes in never giving up.
